At some point every spiritual seeker comes to be crowned by the spiritual night. Mystics call this process the Dark Night of the Soul. It is a time of spiritual crisis, dissolution and deep transmutation, when the old self is in the death pangs and new consciousness is quickening. This is precisely what is happening collectively on our planet. Fortunately for us, such holy endarkenment is mapped out by the luminaries of EVERY spiritual tradition. The mystics agree - the time of the spiritual night is the heart of the spiritual life. Although such times may be shrouded in pain, fear, heartbreak and confusion, they are holy passages. Everything we know falls apart, and the more we wrestle to hold on, the hotter the fires of the Real. The radiant dark of the divine life can be unsettling at first, and yet it is a necessary time of transfiguration; a time when all our certainties lie shattered before us and the Great Mystery can finally do Her work on our souls. It is often a period of spiritual maturation, which reorients us towards our True North. Reality Herself is having her way with us. Trust the process. In these times we do not need fixing. We need those who who can sit with us in the dark and stand with us in the holy fire. Rest into God. Your ordeal is no mistake. These are holy contractions. Surrender to the flow of labour. You are not dying. You are crowning.
Mother Wisdom Speaks
Some of you I will hollow out.
I will make you a cave.
I will carve you so deep the stars will shine in your darkness.
You will be a bowl.
You will be the cup in the rock collecting rain...
I will do this because the world needs the hollowness of you.
I will do this for the space that you will be.
I will do this because you must be large.
People will find their way through you.
People will eat from you
and their hunger will not weaken them to death.
A cup to catch the sacred rain...
Light will flow in your hollowing.
You will be filled with light.
Your bones will shine.
The round open center of you will be radiant.
I will call you Brilliant One.
I will call you Daughter Who is Wide.
I will call you transformed.
